Perhaps those are the signs of a volcanic eruption: Earthquake researchers from Potsdam confirm the observations made by residents in the three-country corner in many places: There is a significant increase in earthquakes compared to the previous year. The scientists see the cause as a reservoir filling with magma, which could develop into a volcano. The ground in Saxony and Bavaria has been shaking more and more frequently since the beginning of the year. "The swarms are getting stronger and the cycles are getting smaller," explains earthquake researcher Torsten Dahm from the German Geo Research Center in Potsdam to the Free Press. So-called swarm quakes - i.e. earthquakes with a short frequency and in the same focal area - are typical for the region. But the scientists now suspect a completely new cause: "We believe that we are observing an awakening volcano." According to the geophysicist, there are indications that a magma reservoir is forming under the so-called Eger Basin. The scientists now want to literally get to the bottom of the earthquake and carry out various boreholes between Czech Bohemia, Bavaria and Saxony. An international research team wants to start drilling up to 4000m deep this year. The volcano is not yet active, but this could change in about 30 years. But Torsten Dahm doesn't want to stir up fears: "You should definitely see the opportunities for a region.
